Specialized Reports- Mountain Bikers Turn to EBikes at an Exponential Rate

The Fast-Moving World of Electric Mountain Bikes

Mountain biking, its sales, and the trails, all is to its peak. But the most exponential growth is seen in the world of electric mountain bikes. They are surging at a much faster rate than anything in the sports world.

The Manager of Specialized Global Marketing Leader Reports

According to Ian Kenny, the Specialized global marketing leader, and former program manager for Tesla report:

“The bike is having a well-deserved moment right now. The growth in e-bikes is even accelerating at a faster pace. The e-bike is on this exponential curve.”

Cycling is up with a Massive Boost after Pandemic

Due to pandemic, people were bound to live in. But now, as the phase is over, people are drawn more to outdoors for recreation. Cycling all across the world is up with a massive boost.

Data Report from NPD

According to the data from NPD Group, in recent years:

“Higher-end bikes have enjoyed the most significant bump, mostly from people already involved in mountain biking looking to upgrade.”

A Surge in E-Biking

In the biking world, no area is having a surge like that of e-bikes. According to an estimate, there is over 200 percent increase in the sales figure of the electric mountain bikes, as compared to the previous year.

What more is, in 2020, over 25 percent of all money spent on mountain bikes have been of the e-bike variety.

Specialized- The One to Introduce E-Bikes

Specialized is one of the big three companies in the mountain biking world. It has the honour2015 to be one of the first to introduce e-bikes in the mountain biking line. To achieve this milestone, Specialized combines the engineering offices in California and Switzerland to continue to create.

Kenny Main Lines for Specialized E-Bikes

Ian Kenny Says:

“If you like riding a bike, you are probably going to really like riding an e-bike,” Kenny says. “It lets you do more of the kind of riding you love to do.” In mountain biking, the e-bike comes as pedal-assist, doubling — or quadrupling — pedal power as you pedal up a hill, allowing riders the time and stamina to ride more trails or go farther. The e-bike also opens up the opportunity to ride to trails farther away.”

He further added:

The e-bike doesn’t take the effort out of the adventure, though, in part pedal-assist design and part the nature of e-bikes. “On average, people who ride an e-bike are getting more exercise,” Kenny says, “they are riding more often and farther. For new riders, e-bikes have this incredible effect of leaving you with a positive impression of your ride right away. That learning curve and fitness curve is steep and harsh (in mountain biking). You can go drop a bunch of money and get kicked on your first ride and not be so inclined to get back on. With the e-bike you are much more likely to get back on the next day. For those reasons, we are seeing explosive growth across e-bike categories, especially on the mountain side.”

Specialized Journey to Electric mountain Bikes

Companies were up to create e-bikes, so was Specialized:

Specialized started with e-bikes a decade ago, and after so long, moving towards the electronic mountain bikes is a natural step taken by the company.

Multiple new companies are coming on board every year, carrying the most popular segment of e-bike creation.

“The Stump-jumper is one of the oldest, longest-standing mountain bike models in the world.”

Specialized learned from early e-bikes and made its way to an e-mountain bike:

To give cyclists the power to ride more trails, Specialized applied learning from the early e-bikes, and worked to build mountain bike with this motto.

Specialized aim was to build a lightweight electric mountain bike:

Specialized did not intend to create an electric mountain bike version with heavy-duty components on a commuter; instead, Specialized was focused on building a mountain bike with a specific geometry  that features a lightweight system and a bike that

“Rides and feels much more like a bike and almost identical to a bike without a motor or assistance.”

Specialized Achievement- The 2015 Turbo Levo

Turbo Levo, one of the highest-rated mountain bikes on the market, was initially launched in 2015. It goes through multiple iterations, refining the system to improve integration and stress mitigation, until now.

Specialized Now has Range of Turbo E-Mountain Bikes with Different Styles

Specialized now offers different varieties in electric mountain bikes range. For instance, The Levo is with more power, and the Levo SL is more lightweight with nimble feeling.

Turbo versions still up to the mark:

These bikes still fit in according to the mountain trails’ expectations. For example, the 150mm of travel, and the Levo SL comes in at 38 pounds, the lightest in its class along with the 240 watts of rider amplification that translates to assist up to 20 miles per hour while personalizing the power delivery.

“The Turbo Levo and Turbo Kenevo versions come with 565 watts of power.”

According to Kenny:

Specialized has achieved this all on its own as compared to the other companies who outsource the e-bike components. By doing so, Specialized gain control over every step of the process, including hardware and software.

“It is what allows us to bring bikes to riders that they aren’t found elsewhere,” Kenny says.

Kenny further added:

“It is really the difference between taking parts and components off the shelf and fitting them together versus creating this experience that is fluid and smooth and consistent. It is a complex machine that takes a lot of engineering and work to create an experience that looks great and when you get on it you feel the difference.”

The Growth Phase in the Turbo E-Mountain Bike Line

The evolution of the software has proven instrumental in the growth of the Turbo-electric mountain line.

Software refinery:

Intending to create smooth assistance that doesn’t surge power, Specialized mined data from millions of miles of trails ridden on its bikes to refine the software.

Hardware streamlining:

But they’ve also streamlined the hardware. Specialized has tuned the battery power, based on data, to offer just what riders need so they can strip weight and refine the feeling, encasing it in an actual mountain bike design for trail punishment.

E-Bike World is Still Young

While the e-bike world is still relatively young and the electric mountain bike space even newer, Kenny says it reminds him of the early days at Tesla, where it is one thing to explain the technology and another to experience it. These days, though, experiences on electric mountain bikes are happening at a much quicker rate.
